Drug and alcohol facts are not as black and white as some would have us believe. It's a sad fact that many lives are afflicted by alcoholism and drug addiction. It's also a fact that alcoholism and drug addiction doesn't just affect the addict or alcoholic but it also affects those closest to them especially their children. This article has no intention of minimizing or denying the suffering that alcoholism and drug addiction causes. We have seen the devastation first-hand. But there is too much dogma and misinformation presented as drug and alcohol facts that are only perpetuating the problems.
Alcohol Facts - Number One
The earlier a person starts to drink, the greater the likelihood they will experience alcohol dependency, dependency at an earlier age and chronic relapsing dependency. Over one million high school students binge drink six or more times per month. One-third of them drink alcohol and smoke pot on the school’s property. They are four times more likely to report D’s and F’s on their report cards. Alcohol abuse disproportionately affects the developing brain. Even if the damage is not permanent, it does represent lost opportunities.

A child raised in a household where one or both parents are alcoholics has a three to fives times greater likelihood of becoming an alcoholic adult than a child raised with both parents being non-alcoholics and non-drug addicts.

Women and Problem Drinking
Fewer women than men drink. However, among the heaviest drinkers, women equal or surpass men in the number of problems that result from their drinking. For example, female alcoholics have death rates 50 to 100 percent higher than those of male alcoholics, including deaths from suicides, alcohol-related accidents, heart disease and stroke, and liver cirrhosis.

HIV and Drugs?
Among drug users, HIV transmission may occur by sharing needles and other injection paraphernalia such as cotton swabs, rinse water, and cookers. Another way that people may contract HIV is simply by using drugs, regardless of whether a needle or syringe is used. Drugs and alcohol interferes with judgment and may lead to risky sexual behaviors that place people in serious risk for contracting or transmitting HIV.

How long does it take to get into rehab?
A new report shows that among almost 700,000 adults were admitted into a drug and alcohol rehab center for the first time in 2011. The average length of time that elapsed between first use of a drug and first entry into a drug and alcohol rehab was 15.6 years. The study also showed the average length of time that elapses between first use of a drug including alcohol and first entry into drug rehab was longer for males than females - 16.5 years versus 13.8 years, respectively. In terms of what substance of abuse had the longest average time delay between first use and first entry, was alcohol, with an average delay of 20.2 years, while prescription painkillers had the shortest - 7.8 years.

Drug facts and alcohol facts are not that simple. It is a sad truth that some people's lives can become a misery through addiction. This article has no intention of denying or minimizing that severity. Nevertheless there is a considerable amount of misinformation presented as drug and alcohol facts and we are going to try and correct that mis-information.

These are some of the issues that this site will discuss. However I am aiming to make this site an interactive one, not just a site where you would come to find drug or alcohol facts, but rather a site where you can contribute to the debate. I will start this off by building some general FAQ type pages with drug and alcohol facts in the guise of common questions.
